Woven all on a silk foundation, this antique Silk Souf Kashan carpet has a beautiful all silk raised pile showcasing the highly skilled weavers floral vase design. In perfect original condition it is a rare piece to find over 100 years old, dating from the early 20th century.  There are many types of silk Kashan rugs, those of which include Souf Kashan’s, which feature flat woven areas (sometimes using metal thread or silk) and raised pile, giving the rug a three dimensional pattern.

The gold silk thread used for the background of this Souf Kashan makes all the other dyes stand out beautifully. More often these were woven in a smaller rug format and primarily they used wool for the piled floral design. This piece dates from 1910 and has been hung for many years on a collectors wall. It is increasingly difficult to find fine antique silk carpets in excellent condition.  Would look remarkable hung on a wall or on the floor.

Kashan was a center of silk production since Safavid times and some of the best classical Persian silk rugs have been attributed to Kashan. At the end of the nineteenth century the weavers there began to produce high quality wool rugs and carpets as well, which continued the high standards of design and technique established in the classical era. The very best Kashan carpets are known as Mohtashem.
