Condition report

A fine example of a period Stockholm Gustavian neo-classical style looking glass by the renowned mirror maker Johan Akerblad. Finely carved with a detailed openwork crest with ribbon cresting above garland swags, this well-proportioned example incorporates many typical Gustavian classical motifs. The two-piece glass plate is a later replacement but has genuine age and is in sympathy with the original, the carved frame retains much of the original putty coloured painted surface, which has been professionally dry scraped of later surfaces. There are minor losses and wear all commensurate with age and function. Beautifully proportioned and of engaging scale, this is a rare signed example of the popular Gustavian tradition in the Swedish vernacular tradition.
