A Set of Twelve George III Dinner plates.
By Paul Storr.
Made Geo III London, 1807.
Weight: 8900g / 286oz 3dwt.
Width: 27 cm / 10.6 inches.
With gadroon rims, engraved with the coat of arms of Charles Lennox the 4th Duke of Richmond, Lennox and Aubigny (1764-1819).
Charles Lennox the 4th Duke of Richmond, Lennox and Aubigny.
Richmond had an illustrious military career, which included seven years as Lord-Lieutenant in Ireland (1807-13) and becoming a full general in 1814.
Richmond married Charlotte Gordon, eldest daughter of Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon, on 9 Sept. 1789; together, they had seven sons and seven daughters.
Richmond spent little time at Goodwood, as his uncle (whom he had inherited the title from) had left considerable debts. Between 1814-1818 he and his wife lived in Brussels before being appointed Governor General of Canada. Tragically a year into this post, Richmond died, having been infected with rabies from a bite from his pet fox. At his death, Richmond’s eldest son, Charles, inherited the titles.
