A Set of Four Victorian Salt Cellars.
London, 1874 by Hunt & Roskell.
Height: 3 ½”; Weight: 58 oz. 6 dwt.
Until the modern period salt was served at the table in open dishes, called salt cellars, although few were as sculptural as this set. The heraldic torse or wreath at the base of each salt indicates that they are a family crest, so they were made as a special commission for a very sumptuous dinner table!
Open Monday-Saturday 10-5.30 (Winter hours); Monday-Friday 10-5 (Summer hours)
