Set of four 18th century Portuguese walnut side chairs.
This elegant set of chairs relate to a set of twelve chairs and a settee from the collection of D. Joa~o V, King of Portugal. The parcel gilding gives this characteristic form of the first half of the 18th century gravitas without injecting too much formality. The chairs are sturdy and comfortable. The bargello needlework seats are characterful feature.
Each with a shaped cresting with a central, stylized parcel-gilt flowerhead. The splats are pierced with parcel-gilt coronets above stylized leaf motifs. The uprights are decorated with stylized parcel-gilt leaf motifs. The seats are caned with bargello squab cushions. Each seat frieze has a repeat of the parcel-gilt decoration on the cresting. Standing on front cabriole legs, the knees with parcel-gilt foliate decoration, terminating in parcel-gilt, ball and claw feet. The tapering back legs have a good rake and are joined by side strechers with a shaped central stretcher. There are the losses and old repairs due to age and use and traces of old woodworm. Excellent original color and patina.
