Valentine's Gift ListAn early scrimshaw-decorated sweethearts stay busk, carved from whalebone and given as a love token by a mariner.
Until 1830, corsets were known as 'stays' and busks were inserted into the front of a stay to flatten the wearer's stomach and keep her torso straight and upright.
Busk worked over one side with panels that include flowers, a love heart and other decorative motifs, all set within a sharks' tooth border.
A rare and fine example.
