The Schooner Barque Sarah Lightfoot beautifully and typically rendered in oil on canvas by John Loos of Antwerp.

From a family of maritime artists working as 'pierhead painters' in Antwerp, John, who is listed as active from around 1867 through to 1903, was the elder son of John F. and brother to Henry.

This portrait is set within a fine bird's-eye maple moulding frame. o.s:40 in x 28 in  

The Sarah Lightfoot was built in 1872 at Littlehampton by J & W.B. Harvey for W.V. Kellow of Fowey. At this time she was captained by Thomas Jones. She was abandoned off the Tyne in heavy weather carrying silversand from Rouen to Tyne, November 1920.
