An unusual cylindrical cherry wood mortar, having a carved date of 1779 and initialled J.H.S. with an anchor. The well turned body with incised lines has concave and convex moulded decoration and is taller than usual which would require a long handled pestle. The whole has an excellent rich colour and patination.
