A fine mid 18th century lignum vitae heart wood pestle and mortar, having a pestle of traditional form with an attractive shaped handle and turned decoration. The mortar, with incised concave and moulded decoration, has a slightly waisted form and conforms with other mortars we have handled of similar age. The whole has a lovely dark rich colour and excellent patination.
English Circa 1740.
Pestle: 11 inches (28 cm.) long and 2.75 inches (7 cm.) diameter.
