An extremely rare Welsh sycamore butter hood, of inverted dish form and having a raised knob handle. The provenance is that it is from a Welsh farmhouse in Carmarthenshire. The whole has an excellent colour and natural patination. Sycamore covers for food are sometimes called hoods and used for covering butter, cheese or plates of food, to protect them from flies and insects. They are sometimes confused with milk or cream skimmers, see stock number 4054, which are saucer shaped and do not have handles.
