A late 18th or early 19th century wafering iron of circular form, which were used for making wafer bread for mass and other religious ceremonies, but they were not entirely ecclesiastical and were often used in common secular use. The interiors had varied designs, sometimes heraldic, others depicting animals, symbols or intricate patterns as in this instance.
