An early 19th century brass candle mould of traditional form, having a hook to the side and a small hole to the end to drawer the wick. Wax candles were often taxed, so many country folk used rushes to make rush lights. When the rush was dry it was drawn through melted animal fat (tallow) and allowed to dry. When the fat had set they were ready for use in a rush light nip or holder.
