A large cylindrical cherry wood go to bed, having a domed top with a central hole that has a bone surround to receive the match, which when unscrewed reveals a vacant interior to store matches. The body, of lighthouse form, has a stepped base. The underside is lined with sanded paper for striking purposes. These go to beds were used to light the way, instead of using candles, which were expensive. They were also used on the desk for melting sealing wax when sealing letters. The whole has a lovely rich colour and excellent patination.
