A most unusual and extremely tactile Scandinavian grinding mortar and stone, the rectangular burr birch mortar, with vertical sides and angled ends, has a recessed centre that fits the grinding stone. It was probably used for salt, sugar or other culinary substances. The whole has an excellent grain, colour and patination.
