A most attractive named and dated pair of chip carved sycamore sugar tongs, made either as a love token or a valentine. Occasionally, these items were made and given as thank you gifts from the striking miners to people who supported them , by donating money to the cause. The tongs have a rectangular glazed window to each side, which reads 'Mrs Oldfield' & 'Roy 1894' with two further glazed oblong windows having coloured inserts near the end and two open carved hearts and circles. The whole has a good honey colour and patination.
