A well carved and rounded Napoleonic mutton bone toggle, having a serrated edge. The front is carved with a crucifix above an anchor, surrounded by small drilled circles, and with the remains of red wax filling, which suggests that the carver was probably a sailor. The skill of Prisoners of War inmates in prison camps, such as Dartmoor, is extensive ranging from full rigged ships to models and small items. They were allowed to sell or exchange on market days within the prison compound.
