An exceptionally large 18th century turned ash bowl, having a slightly rounded, angled and stepped rim. As often found with ash items, it has a lovely pronounced grain, especially in its interior. The base, as one can see from the photograph, has opened and split through use and shrinkage, but is solid and firm. This could be filled , but we decided to leave it as original. The patination is natural, it has not been wax polished. Bowls this size are extremely rare and this is a wonderful example, showing the skill of a competent turner.
