A fine mid 19th century boxwood pill silverer, having a screw removable lid. The whole, raised on a concave stem and stepped circular foot, has a wonderful colour and patination. The top is stamped S Maw & Son, who were working in Aldersgate Street, London between 1860-1870.
These pill silverers were used by apothecaries, having made their pills, they would be moisturised with mucilage of acacia and then put in these containers with a silver leaf, gently rolling the pills within, which would coat them ready for storage in a bottle.
