An interesting beech tip shoe, known as a knur and spell (as illustrated in Pinto, plate 234). The ball is thrown in the air while the player tries to hit it with a striking stick. This game was almost entirely confined to the Northern Counties, and played by adults, sometimes for immence stakes. The whole retains a patination.
