Romano-Egyptian footed bowl

Egypt, 4th century AD

Glass

Free blown in green glass with air bubbles, the deep bowl with a wide, flanged collar rim, set on a flaring base which has diagonal marks and an irregular outer edge. Glossy surface, Pontil mark at center of base. Intact.

This is a bell-shaped version of Karanis Class III A.I.b.i. Though the fabric is Alexandrian, most such examples have been found in Syro-Palestinian regions.

Provenance

John J. Slocum (1914-1997) Newport, Rhode Island, USA; acquired most of his collection while serving as US cultural attaché to Egypt in the 1960s
