Roman head of Asclepius.
Circa 2nd century AD.
Marble.
Height: 20 centimetres.
Head of Asclepius, god of medicine, carved from marble with added use of a hand drill. His heavily lidded eyes with incised irises and drilled crescentic pupils. There is a deep crease on his forehead, he has a straight nose and thick, slightly parted lips framed by a full, centrally-divided beard of overlapping curls. His luxuriant hair is parted in the centre and sweep up above his forehead, then cascading down the sides of his face in wavy voluted locks.
After a Hellenistic original from 350BC ?? (see Amorgos??).
