Roman floral architectural element, circa 1st century AD.

Carved in high relief, the fragment is composed of four incurving leaves or petals, encircling a small hole, set within six open and downward curling acanthus leaves.
A chip to one of the outer leaves restored.

This acanthus rosette is most likely an architectural element, which interspersed the modillions (corbels) beneath the cornice of a temple or building. The central hole would have taken a bronze fitting that may have been gilded, and would have held the element in place.
