Very attractive and highly decorative George III silver gilt tea caddy by Robert Garrard I engraved with scrolls and roses. London 1815.
The full set of hallmarks is clearly stamped on one of the sides of the caddy. The makers mark, lion passant and date letter are marked on the removable base. The removable lid is stamped on the inside with the lion passant and date mark.
Robert Garrard I entered his first mark as plateworker in partnership with John Wakelin. He registered his second mark alone in 1802. According to Grimwade, during the life of his son Robert Garrard II the firm was appointed Goldsmiths and Jewellers to the King in 1830 and the family firm still holds this Royal appointment today.
