A gold ring set with an ancient garnet intaglio depicting a Goddess. The goddess is shown facing dexter wearing jewelled earrings and necklace, a flower surmounting her carefully braided hair. The intaglio displays an attractive mauve hue with high clarity.
The cabochon intaglio is Ptolemaic, Hellenistic and dates to the 2nd - 1st Century BC.
The intaglio measures 1.8 x 1.3cm.
The gold ring is Georgian with bifurcated shoulders leading to a double reeded band and dates to early 19th century.
The mount is a fine setting with bifurcated shoulders leading to a double reeded band, measuring UK N 1/2 / US 7.
The gold repair to the gem was made at the same time as the setting, which is a testament to the importance of the intaglio.
