Printed and sold by Robert Sayer around 1754, within a good carved, ebonized and parcel gilt ‘Hogarth’ type frame.

o.s.12.25 in x 16.25 in.

William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, ‘One of His Majesty’s Principal Secretary’s of State And one of His Majesty’s most Honble Privy Council’. Recognised as a brilliant orator, he was in fact out of power for most of his career and became best known for his attacks on the corrupt government of Walpole, Hanovarian subsidies during the 1740’s, peace with France during the 1760’s and the uncompromising policy towards the American colonies during the 1770’s. Scholars rank him highly among all Prime Ministers on account of his commanding manner, brilliant rhetoric and sharp debating skills made possible due to his broad literary knowledge and deep understanding of history.
