An Unusual Regency Period Japanned Centre Table with Bamboo Frieze.
English, circa 1820.
The rectangular top japanned with scenes of villages on islands with figures and boats, within a trellised border. The frieze similarly decorated with birds, flowers and foliage with a bamboo apron. Raised on a tapering legs and terminating in gilt bronze paw feet.
The decoration on this exquisite table although created in England is very much in the style of eighteenth century Chinese lacquer often found on lacquer screens imported from the East and frequently, incorporated into items of decorative furniture.
