Regency Mahogany Imperial Action Extending Dining Table.
An Exceptional Quality Early 19th Century, Regency Period, Mahogany "Imperial" Extending Dining Table, To Seat Between 12 & 16, Having Telescopic Sliding Action To Each D End, With Three Additional Leaves, The Superbly Figured Top Over Attractive Shallow Veneered Frieze, Raised On 8 Incredibly Elegant, Finely Turned Tapering Legs With Reeded Decoration, Raised On Original Brass Castors.
Gillows patented their Imperial dining-table in 1804 in which a variable number of loose leaves were fitted between fixed end leaves and initially with as many as ten or twelve legs to support the central leaves. Within a few years the design largely superseded most earlier ones and it remained popular throughout the Regency period and beyond. This table can be attributed to Gillows based on the exceptionally fine legs and superbly rich mahogany timber used within its construction.
As one would expect this Regency Dining Table is of quite exceptional quality construction and boasts rich mahogany timbers. The design is well thought out with all of the legs inset, making the table easy to sit at.
In terms of numbers, when fully extended the table could probably seat up to 16, although the most comfortable number would be 12. With the design of the table allowing the three leaves to be removed entirely, or used in any combination which one wishes then actually the possibilities are endless in terms of how one may wish to configure this table from one day to the next.
The overall condition is certainly very good, with just a few historic old marks and scratches which have now very much blended into the overall surface as can be seen by the images attached.
As with all items which we offer for sale this dining table has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by out specialist antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale, ensuring it is in its best possible condition before being placed on sale.
