A charming and good quality Regency period gilt overmantle mirror of bold proportion.

Having elegantly carved lions mask heads to corners and spiral twist half turned column border enclosing replacement mirror plate.

This elegant overmantle mirror is slightly larger than the majority you see of this period. It is also quite unusual, and particularly nice, in terms of its design, sporting some excellently carved lions mask heads to the corners and also some elegant half turned columns.

The gilding is in reasonably good condition, having clearly been refreshed at various points in the past, without ever appearing to have been entirely re-gilded, which means it retains an attractive lustre and patina.

As the name suggests overmantle mirrors were made to sit on, or just above the mantelpiece in large Georgian and Regency homes. They were nearly always low and wide so as to fill the space in an attractive fashion. They come in many different shapes, designs, sized and qualities and this is a particularly nice, but at the same time not excessively elaborate example.

As with most of our stock this item has been cleaned and polished in the traditional fashion within our workshops by our skilled and experienced craftsman before being offered for sale, meaning it is ready to go straight into the home.
