Rare mid 14th Century Venetian Holy Water Stoup / Font. Italian. Circa 1350.

This fine holy water stoup is made from the rare lumanchella fossilised stone, filled with fossils of clam and snail shells. The half round basin with scrolling vine decoration and standing on its original base sculptured as a ram’s head. Possibly representing Christian sacrifice.

Lumanchella is a rare, fossilised stone quarried since the bronze age in the valleys near Verona north of Venice.

Provenance - Private collection.
