A gorgeous and very rare antique Oushak rug in impeccable original condition, the soft green background and muted pink border are dyes popular from this Turkish region.  As this rug is from the late 19th century the dyes have faded to this gentle soft palette.  See the image attached of the back of the rug to see how bright they would have been 100 years ago.  The design is lovely and open and easy on the eye, with stylised floral palmettes and the simplistic vine border pattern.  The weave on Oushak rugs is generally rather coarse using bigger knotting than Persian rugs, as the wool is extremely soft the pile height is high on this rug.  A wonderful decorative antique rug ideal for many rooms.

Oushak rugs or Ushak depending on the spelling preference, were woven in Western Anatolia which was one of the largest rug production areas since the Ottoman Empire.  Their designs tend to be more open than Persian rugs and soft dyes are not uncommon.  Often younger Ushaks or Oushaks will be rich red in colour and use bolder geometric designs.  This Anatolian carpet has an almost contemporary feel to it and would work in a modern space as well as traditional.  We clean every carpet before offering it for sale and make sure the ends and fringes are secured.  A decorative subtle piece ideal for a soft scheme.

Ushak rugs and carpets were woven in the Anatolian highlands south of Istanbul where they used extremely soft wool and using the larger turkish knot made them weave more open designs than Persian carpets. They are increasingly desirable today due to their often softer palette than antique Persian carpets, thus making them easy to place in a drawing room or under a dining table.
