THIS IMPOSING AND HEAVILY CONSTRUCTED CLAMP CHEST RETAINS BOTH ITS ORGINAL GABLED LID AND MUCH OF ITS ORIGINAL HEIGHT, MOST MEDIEVAL CHESTS OF THIS NATURE HAVE NOW HAD THEIR FEET SHORTENED DUE TO DAMP FLOORS AND ROT ETC, BUT THIS RARE SURVIVOR RETAINS ALMOST ITS FULL HEIGHT. IT HAS A WONDERFUL NATURAL COLOUR AND PATINA. THE LOCK PLATE ALTHOUGH ANCIENT WE THINK IS VERY LIKELY A VERY OLD REPLACEMENT. THE SIZE OF THIS MEDIEVAL CHEST INDICATES THAT IT WAS MOST PROBABLY USED DOMESTICALLY, IT REPRESENTS THE FORM OF STORAGE FURNITURE FROM ENGLISH HOUSEHOLDS IN THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD.

TILL NOW LACKING FROM THE INSIDE.

BECAUSE OF THE CHESTS COMPLETENESS AND BECAUSE ITS SIZE INDICATES IT WAS LIKELY A DOMESTIC OBJECT, IT IS AN IMPORTANT DOCUMENT OF ENGLISH MEDIEVAL SOCIAL HISTORY.

PROVENANCE- PRIVATE ENGLISH COLLECTION.
