Rare 18th Century Italian Cassone.

Italy, 1763.

A rare mid eighteenth century Italian marriage coffer, decorated with two architectural arches to the front, filled with sprays of flowers and surrounded by painted scrolling motives, the feet and sides also with painted scrolling decoration. The chest opening and fastening with its original wrought iron lock and key, to reveal a large interior with four small drawers and a storage compartment.

Inscribed on the chest is the date 1763 and the initials ‘M.M’, alluding to the marital union that gave function to this coffer. Intended to hold the wedding dress and other items such as linen or jewellery exchanged as part of the nuptials, this chest occupied an integral role in the marriage and would have accompanied the bride to her new home.
