Of elliptical form, constructed in gilt bronze, rising from swept feet, the body dressed with stylised floral enamelled plaques, the hinged, rising top having a fine micro-mosaic of the Colosseum, with figures to the foreground; the red quilted interior having the maker's name in gilt, 'C. Rocchegianni Roma'.

LITERATURE
Cesare Roccheggiani is recorded as working at the Vatican Mosaic Workshops (est 1576) between 1856-1864. Examples of his work may be seen at the Victoria & Albert Museum London, in The Gilbert Collection.
