This fine Portuguese commode chest of drawers show examples of both French and English influence that inspired Portuguese taste in the mid-18th century with sinuous lines and carving. T English designs, such as those typified by Thomas Chippendale. Around 1744 this prompted English craftsmen to set up in Portugal, exchanging their product in return for wine and spices. These English merchants helped to broaden furniture tastes as they established their trade in Portugal. Expansion of fashions was simultaneously facilitated by publications such as Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman's and Cabinet Maker Director, published in 1754.

The refinement of the Portuguese furniture of the 18th century is also due to the considerable wealth pouring in from Brazil   and the newly discovered gold and diamond mines. This colonial opulence contributed to the explosive demand for new fashionable furniture. The Marquis of Pombal launched the movement in ordering various European works of art and inviting English craftsman to come and work in Portugal. William Beckford, who visited Portugal in 1787, admired the Marquis' great collection. Portuguese, rosewood circa 1775
