A fine Georgian portrait of an English country gentleman executed in pastel by James Sharples and within the original gilt gesso frame. o.s:13 in x 14 in.

An English portrait painter and pastelist, James Sharples moved with his family and third wife, Ellen, to the United States in 1794. He first exhibited at the Royal Academ, London, in 1779. Living in Washington DC, the Sharples established a successful portraiture practice with James painting the portraits of American leaders and Ellen copying them on commission. Ellen had been a pupil of James’ in England, before marrying him in 1787, and worked on her own account producing original portraits in pastel and watercolour and miniatures on ivory.

This portrait done circa 1785.
