Portrait of Charles Gordon as a young man. Attributed to Theophilus Clarke R.A. (c1776-1832). Oil on canvas. Carved giltwood frame. 

This fine portrait shows Charles Gordon as a young man wearing the style of Georgian dress which was fashionable at the time. The style of painting reflects the more relaxed, informal style that was emerging in the early 1800’s.

Theophilus Clarke entered the Royal Academy school aged 17 in 1793 where he studied under John Opie. Clarke exhibited 68 times at the Royal Academy. His works shows the influence of Opie, Hoppner and Lawrence.

His works are represented in the National Portrait Gallery, London and Eton College.
