A fine late 19th century Persian Tabriz Carpet

Hand knotted in wool

The city of Tabriz in the far northwest of Persia is renowened for its beautiful weavings. Overall floral and medallion designs are finely woven in pastel colourings or with strong bold colourings, generally in wool but also in pure silk.

ABRASH, Colour variations in oriental Carpets and Rugs.

Antique, hand knotted Oriental Rugs were woven from multiple dye lots during their creation. As one dye lot was replaced by another there were often variations in the colour causing what is known as " Abrash "

These variations were not immediately noticable by the weaver, but became more apparent with the passing of time, giving the Carpet or Rug a unique character.
