The Salver is of an unusual size, most probably for serving drinks, and stands on four unusual feet decorated with plam leaves and flower heads. The raised shaped circular rim is decorated with gadrooning interspersed with tear drop motifs and acanthus leaves.

This is a most unusual design for Paul Storr. The centre of the salver is engraved with a contemporary Armorial, with Motto below and Crest above, all surrounded by a finely executed cartouche of pluming feathery scrolls.

The Salver is in excellent condition, is of a very good weight and is very well marked on the reverse. Salvers are rare from the workshops of Paul Storr, as he made very few during his career.

The Arms and Crest are those of Chaplin, quartering Taylor impaling Fane. They are specifically those of Charles Chaplin Esq.,of Blankney and Tathwell, County Lincolnshire.

Chaplin was born in 1786 and, in 1812, he married, Caroline, daughter of the Honourable Henry Fane of Fulbeck, County Lincolnshire (Fane was the younger son of the 8th Earl of Westmorland. Charles Chaplin was a magistrate and D.L for the county and held the position of M.P. for Lincoln, 1818-1831.

As this piece was made in 1812, it is probable that it was a wedding present to celebrate the marriage of Charles Chaplin to Caroline Fane.
