A pair of North Italian kingwood, amaranth, tulipwood, and fruitwood marquetry commodes in the manner of Giuseppe Maggiolini, circa 1790.

Purchased by William James in Florence, 13th April 1892;
thence by descent at West Dean Park, Sussex.

William James acquired the 8,500 acre West Dean estate in Sussex in 1891. Travelling with his wife Evelyn in Italy in 1892, they bought extensively.

These Commodes were purchased in Florence on 13th April, on which date James records “T. Gagliardi, Florence 6 pieces Maggiolini work, 2 chest-of-drawers, 2 night tables…£1,500” (William James Papers, West Dean Archive) 

The pair of commodini or night tables ensuite with the commodes remain at West Dean.
