Pair of Late 18th Century Walnut Commodes.

Italy, circa 1790.

A fine pair of late eighteenth century walnut commodes with original grey, green and white marble tops. Having three drawers, the top one slightly overhanging the others, and supported by fluted brass columns. The drawers having superb use of veneers and excellent bookmatched flaming, with painted decoration to enhance the pattern of the grains in the veneer. Standing on sturdy square legs and block feet.

This form of decoration was often used to enhance the appearance of the timber. It is found in many styles and periods, characterised by a strong sense of balance and symmetry.
