Pair of Japanese Yuzen Birodo from the Meiji period dating to about 1900.

The design is extremely elegant, presenting mirror images of a coastal scene, but with subtle differences. The elongated, tall size is unusual, too. Yuzen Birodo were often made for export, especially after the rise of "Japonism" in Europe from the early 1870s onwards.

The technical skill and precision needed to create such a refined textile is impressive. It is dyed silk velvet, with the pile partly cut to produce the effect of three dimensionality.

The textiles are in excellent condition.
