A pair of George III period Gillows mahogany hall chairs.
An Outstanding Pair Of Gillows shell back mahogany Hall Chairs. Raised on reeded sabre legs with panel seats and beautifully carved shell backs and painted inscription, around a sunburst, in Latin which reads "Propositi Tenax" which roughly translates as " Never Quit". In very good and original condition.

One of a pair of identical chairs is illustrated in Susan E Stuarts books "Gillow of Lancaster and London 1730-1840" plate 177 (page 203) and made in 1811 for The Reverend Holland Edwards of Pennant Conway North Wales.
