Pair of Fine Bessarabian Kilim Rugs.
Approx. 1.75 x 1.09 metres.
The tradition of Bessarabian kilim weaving dates to the later period of Ottoman rule over the Eastern Balkans – broadly, the territory now covered by Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova – and is known for an interesting combination of design elements from Anatolian carpets, as well as from high-end European weavings.
This pair of mid 20th Century pieces are an especially charming example, featuring a wonderful soft chocolate brown ground and a simple overall design, with floral motifs in light pastel shades repeated across the field; a restrained, earthy palette. Its borderless composition lends the kilims a feeling of space and balance.
A fine and unique example of its type, rare as a matching pair, these stylish mid-century pieces are retained in very good condition for everyday use, to suit a sophisticated interior.
