A pair of Edo period black and gold lacquer Samurai helmet boxes (Hakko Bako), each of ribbed cylindrical form with a lid, a black lacquer interior, green tasselled cord and four tapering square-section legs which support the sides of the box, all decorated with paulownia blossoms and scrolling flowerheads with engraved gilt mounts incised with further paulownia flowers.

Japanese, early 19th century (Edo period 1615-1868).
