Pair of Chinese famille verte baluster jugs.
Kangxi (1662-1722).
With early gilt copper mounts, loop handles and covers. The pear-shaped bodies with six moulded lappet panels containing climbing boughs of peony issuing from rockwork.
The feet with further ogee-shaped cartouches containing flower heads. The domed lids with blooming peony and flying insects and shell-shaped thumb pieces, the loop handles decorated with leafy garlands.
Metal fittings and mounts often instilled a piece with greater value; in this case they are functional and allow imported porcelain to be used in a western context, such as drinking beer. Roundbellied examples, as well as the more common cylindrical or tapering varieties, were based on traditional European silver shapes.
Provenance: Leighon House, Manaton, Devon.
