Pair of Chinese blue and white vases and covers, Kangxi (1662-1722), of baluster form, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with alternating panels containing figures wandering within mountainous landscapes and peony flowers issuing from rockwork, a geometric zigzag band to the footrims, a long continuous band containing a misted landscape to the necks, the lids with similar bracketed panels with landscapes and flowers with peach-shaped knops, the bases with a solid lozenge. Within porcelain design, the baluster shape emerged in the early 18th century to cater to Dutch demand for ‘garniture’ sets. The shape was an elongated version of the more traditional Chinese hu jars, which were designed to contain alcohol or water and had been produced since the Han dynasty.
