David Hockney etching

Original David Hockney etching of Celia Birtwell, iconic British textile designer and fashion designer, signed, numbered 13 of an edition of 75, dated 1969
Hockney has had a close friendship with Celia over the years. He first met her in Los Angeles in 1964. Celia also features in a major Hockney work (with her then husband Ossie Clark) in Hockney’s large double portrait Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy, 1971 in the Tate Gallery. At this time she was at the top of the fashion industry in London in the ‘Swinging Sixties’.

This etching, along with another etching of the same year, “Peter”, marked the beginning of Hockney’s work in full-length figure studies. A version of this print from the same edition can be found in the collection of the Tate Gallery London.
