Condition report

Thompson Swan, referred to as Tom Swan, was both a Publican and a Pierhead Painter based in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He worked only in pen, ink and watercolours and was entirely self-taught. His work exclusively depicts English east coast sailing and steam powered fishing vessels and recording their adventures. He worked in a naïve style which was direct and spontaneous, employing a bold colourful palette. In his lifetime, he is recoded as having sold his paintings, complete with gilt frames, for £1 each. This present work is unusual in that it includes details of a harbour wall to the background but is typical of his style. Painted in good large scale it has been professionally framed conserved and put on acid free backing and is in excellent condition, with incidental shadows of staining to the paper in the minimally painted sky. This is a fine, wonderfully naïve autograph work by Swan.
