Dated: 1785 Nottingham England

The stoneware salt-glazed puzzle jug was made at the Nottingham pottery in the late 18th century period. The jug has a classic lustrous brown glaze and has three spouts, a hollow handle, and a band of small holes around the shoulder.

Perhaps the Nottingham pottery is less appreciated in the UK, probably overshadowed by the vast output from the Staffordshire Potteries.

However, their wares are very distinctive, with deep shiny, lustrous metallic glaze on finely produced pots with a simple but elegantly understated design and features. The wares found a ready home market with strong exports to the Eastern seaboard of America.

Dimensions: 7 inches high

Current Condition: Fine clean unrestored condition.

Literature: Nottingham Salt-Glazed Stoneware 1690-1800, Henstock, Hildyard, and Wood, published by the Nottingham City Museums and Galleries.
