Miss Selby (British, mid 19th century)

Netley Abbey, Hampshire

Pen and brown ink and wash over traces of pencil, inscribed verso: Miss Selby/Netley Abbey

18.5 x 23.5 cm

This charming early nineteenth century drawing captures the evocative ruin of Netley Abbey. A marvellous example of the picturesque landscape, it is executed in pen, brown ink and wash over traces of pencil, and inscribed verso: 'Miss Selby/Netley Abbey'.

Its distinctive style recalls the work of Heneage Finch (1751–1812), Viscount Guernsey, 4th Earl of Aylesford from 1777, whose lively penwork was his hallmark. The work of his siblings and children share this attribute, and it may be that Miss Selby knew one of them and was influenced by their style.

The drawing is in very fresh condition, as it has been in an album until now and not exposed to the light.

Provenance: Augusta Raymond-Barker, Fairford Park, Gloucestershire; thence by family descent until 2016.
